Mission Projects

One of the Mission's most recent projects was the construction of the Cannery.

One difficulty for the people of Haiti is conserving different types of foods, due to the lack of electricity and therefore freezers, or even any type of refrigeration.

Shown at right: Workers are cementing down roofing material on the new cannery building.

With the cannery project completed and operational, we can now help the Haitians can their own garden vegetables and fruit products.

Meat products from goats, cattle and pigs can also be canned as shown in the photo at left.

The Mission offers cans of meat for public purchase, or in some cases, for charity to other people in need.

When we can products for others outside the Mission, they are allowed to help our staff process the food.

They are also required to give the Mission a percentage of the canned product.

Food processors such as the ones shown at right are powered by bottled propane.

Workers shown at left are preparing meat for the cookers.

Electricity for the Mission is supplied by the generator shown below.

The generator is housed in the addition shown in the photo at right, which is located at the rear of the Mission building.

The Mission Hospital

The Son Light Mission Lacolline Hospital was our first project.

Currently, the hospital is equipped with a full staff of qualified doctors and nusres, and houses 19 beds.

We provide several different programs for preventive health care and also offer treatment to many undernourished children living throughout the Lacolline valley.

We have a very good vaccination program, as well as programs and education for expecting mothers.

Shown at left are some of our current patients. Most of the time our hospital is operating at 100% capacity.

Here is one of our out clinics shown administering vaccinations to the children of Lacolline Valley.

Members of the staff are counting out and packaging pills in preparation of distribution to patients needing the medication.

A team of surgeons operates on a patient.

The Mission Hospital serves the Lacolline Valley of about 40,000 people.

We also serve many people that come from the other side of the mountains since in Haiti there is an average of only one Doctor available for every 20,000 people.

The Mission Church

Son Light Mission Lacolline has two places of worship. One church is located right on the Mission grounds and the other church is located about 6 miles up the valley.

They are a very active group with many activities for both the adults and the youth.

Our church is growing quickly and has been working very well together, along with the School and the Hospital.

The Mission School

The Mission School project was one of our most worthwhile undertakings.

Shown at right are workers applying steel roofing to the new school building.

Our Mission school was conducting classes even before the construction was complete.

And here is one of our classes of eager students!

Over 400 children attend our school, which is administered by a very qualified teaching staff.

The elementary classes run from  7:30 am untill 1:30 pm and we provide them a meal before they go home.

In the afternoon, our high school classes start.

Schools where Haitian kids can prepare for the exam they need in order to receive the prestigious Government diploma are not very plentiful.

This project was needed very much.

Agricultural News & Ongoing Efforts

There are many interesting things going on in the Agriculture Dept.

We just started raising boar goats for meat.

They are a great meat producing animal, economically as well as nutritionally.

People have been bringing their native goats to us so they can produce offspring from our male meat goats.

This increases the overall quality of their goat herds.

We also have experimental gardens set up to raise different types of crops including corn, milo, and other vegetables.

We have also been testing different types of drip irrigation systems.

Our workhorses - Hauling supplies and transporting people to and fro.

Other ongoing projects include Internet education, Sewing classes, Welding classes, and Heavy Equipment road grading projects.

Future projects that we would like to do as soon as finances permit:

1. Home for the aging;  reason being most do not have any retirment plans
2. Purchase a Compact Tractor with cultivating and planting equipment.
3. Meat Rabbit project starting with 1 male rabbit and 2 female per family because of the rapid reproduction rate of the rabbits.
